Desert Rose cares about your health and cooks with cast iron

Is your New Year's Resolution to eat healthier? Not a fan of cooking at home? This month I will be highlighting the healthy choices that Desert Rose makes to ensure the food you eat will leave you feeling tantalized while maintaining healthy food intake. A couple of years ago, Desert Rose Restaurant and Catering made a committment to do all of their sauteeing in cast iron pans. The negative health impacts of eating food prepared on nonstick pans-what nearly all restaurants use-pushed us to make the change. Did you know that nonstick pans contain PFCs (perfluorocarbons), a chemical that’s linked to liver damage, cancer and developmental problems? Other restaurants use aluminum cookware which is no better. There are numerous studies that show the link between aluminum and Alzheimer's disease. Thus the switch to cast iron which has no negative health impacts but actually has positive health impacts. First of all, we need to use less oil to sautee in cast iron. In addition, cooking on cast iron can increase your iron intake- cast iron fortifies your food with iron. Studies show that up to 10% of women are iron deficient.Iron is critical for maitaining energy levels and helps to boost your immune system-something all Montanans can benefit from at this time of year. So if you are still wanting to go out to eat, but want to maintain that healthy diet, check out our menu and find out how amazing cast iron sauteed veggies can taste!
